The Giant Uganda Gorillas

The bat-eared fox has a jackal like look with slender legs and sharp pointed slightly long muzzle. Its ears are 14cm large and 5 inches tall. The fascinating thing about this creature is it can travel 12km in search for food (insects, arthropods and occasionally rodents) on a single night.

The defassa waterbucks are grizzled grey or brown with white markings on the face and rump. They have white patches above the eyes, nose and mouth. These creatures are mostly found in vicinage of rivers because they are very dependent on water hence the name waterbuck. They can run up to a speed of 50km/h. A fun fact about defassa waterbucks is they communicate visually through a process called the fleshmen response where they curl up their upper lip to show their front teeth while inhaling their closed nostrils. These interesting species is mostly found in the savannah grasslands especially in Queen Elizabeth National Park. One of the rarely talked about aquatic specie living around the dens of Lake Victoria is the spotted- necked otter. This astounding diurnal animal has a long and muscular tail that is flattened horizontally and a water repellent fur that is usually chocolate brown and marked with creamy or white blotches over the chest and throat. Their droppings are composed of hundred different scents and about seventeen are thought to have information about their gender and age. Formerly known as Owen falls, Nalubaale dam is popularly known as a hydroelectric power station. It is one of the oldest power stations in Uganda. The dam generates about 180 megawatts (240000 hp) hence being able to supply electricity to Uganda and neighboring parts of Kenya and Tanzania. The interesting fact about this dam is that it controls lake Victoria’s outflows through a series of approximately ten turbines. Also known as the black-cheeked white nose monkey, the red tailed monkeys often interbreed in Kibale Foerst National Park with the blue monkeys. Their tails reach about 35 inches. These magnificent primates have elastic large cheeks which they use to gather and store food in their mouth. Known to be very social animals, they live in groups of 7-30 individuals where they help each other out in grooming. They are very active in the early morning and evening and tend to give birth to a single baby. Known to be the largest of the Zebra species, the grevy’s zebras are native to the northern part of Kenya. They have the largest ears and peculiar strips which are taller and more narrow compared to the other zebras. These species of zebras have been recorded to go until five days without even taking a drop of water. They also have a mule-like appearance and can run at 40mph. The Grey cheeked Mangebay is known to be an ancient monkey with long dark grey hair on their body and head. Both male and females have tails that are longer than their bodies. Unlike the baboons, the grey cheeked Mangebay do not have a dominant male. They live in a group of 5-30 individuals. The Mubako community is located in the rambling savannah of Murchison falls. Their village is made up of a cluster of mud-thatched houses that the villagers mostly use to escape the scorching sun and cold nights. They have different small craft shops that they use to sell collections of curved wooden sculptures and also hand woven items. During dry seasons, they grind cassava and use it to make bread flour and they also cultivate cotton. Murchison Falls National Park is famously known for having the most powerful waterfall in the world, where the longest river in the world squeezes through a 7-meter gap and then drops down 45 meters. The Falls can be seen from the top, accessible by car or from the bottom accessible by boat, you can even walk to the top of the falls having been dropped off close to the bottom of the falls by boat
