Itinerary
Day 1
Day 1: When you arrive into Kigali Airport you will be met by your personal driver guide who will transfer you to your city hotel where you can spend the night recovering from the long journey and preparing for the journey ahead. Overnight at Kigali Mahlatini recommends the following accommodation: Kigali Serena Hotel in a standard room (Bed & Breakfast) - See more accommodation options in Kigali
Day 2
Nyungwe Forest
Day 2 - 4: After breakfast your driver guide will drive you south to Nyanza, the historical seat of the Rwanda kingdom. Here you will visit the Royal Palace which has been resorted, entirely of traditional materials, to its 19th century grandeur. A stop may also be made at the University town of Butare to visit the National Museum which houses perhaps the greatest ethnographic collection in East and Central Africa. It provides an in depth look at Rwandan Cultural heritage. After a stop for lunch you will proceed onwards to Nyungwe Forest National Park arriving at your lodge in time for dinner and overnight. The following morning you will head to the park’s headquarters for a half day forest trek in search of the Angola Colobus monkeys which can be found here in troops of several hundred. In addition to this there are plenty of other primate species to marvel at as well as the numerous bird and planet species for which the park is famous. After lunch you will tour a nearby tea plantation. On your last day a thrilling adventure await you on the Nyungwe Canopy Walk. From the park information centre, descend the 40 degree slant via a zig-zag foot path to the first tower deep in the forest valley for the 1 ½ hr walk on the Canopy Walk’s suspension bridge. Besides being so high in such a picturesque location, the walk allows access to the upper parts of the forest, where one can see some unique ‘canopy’ species; apes, birds, butterflies, plants and insects, flowers, leaves and other animals that live in the roof of the forest which are otherwise invisible but can now be seen at eye level or even from above. It is an unforgettable experience. 3 nights at Nyungwe Forest National Park Mahlatini recommends the following accommodation: Nyungwe Forest Lodge in a standard room (Full Board) - See more accommodation options in Nyungwe Forest Lodge
Day 5
Virunga | Volcanoes
Day 5 - 7: After breakfast you will be transferred to Kamembe (45 min) for a scheduled flight to Kigali. Here a guide will meet you and take you on a city tour of Kigali. Sights include: the Kandt Museum, the old section of Kigali town, the craft centres and the genocide memorial site. Following lunch at a local restaurant you will drive north to Ruhengeri at the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes (2 ½ hours) and arrive at Sabyinyo Lodge in time for dinner and overnight. After an early breakfast the following morning you will be taken to park headquarters to be allocated a gorilla tracking group. After a briefing you will depart with your trackers on your gorilla tracking adventure. Upon sighting the gorilla family you will have an hour to enjoy their company and observe as they go about their daily life, feeding, playing, resting and raising their young. In the afternoon you will tour the nearby ex-poacher’s village. This is an award winning conservation initiative, former poachers were convinced to renounce their ways and become conservation activists. Together with their families, they founded this little community village where they now participate in eco-tourism showcasing Rwandan culture and customs. The following day you will have another opportunity to go gorilla tracking and visit a different family – no two visits are ever the same (price not included). In the afternoon enjoy some sightseeing around the Twin Lakes, Burera and Ruhondo which are two shimmering volcanic crater lakes located high in the Virungas and separated by a narrow stretch of earth. You can take a walk with your guide in the hills bordering the lakes in search of birds and descend and walk along the lakes and through the local village and its small market place or stop for an afternoon coffee at the adjacent Virunga Lodge. 3 nights at Volcanoes National Park Mahlatini recommends the following accommodation: Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge - See more accommodation options in Volcanoes National Park
Day 4
Day 4: Departure Today drive back to Kigali Airport for your departing flight.
