5 Days Marangu Route is a well-liked ascent route on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain. This nicknamed "Coca-Cola" route because it's less demanding and more pleasant than other routes, climbers frequently select this one. A climber may decide to prolong the Marangu Route to 6 days in order to properly acclimatise, however it normally takes about 5 days to complete. Situated on the southeast face of Mount Kilimanjaro, the route begins at the Marangu Gate and proceeds along a clearly marked path that passes through several forest zones.
Additionally, this is the only route that offers solar-lit sleeping cabins with cosy beds at each camp site. The bunks include a sponge mattress and pillow, and the huts are shared. Horombo Hut has 120 beds, while Mandara and Kibo Huts have 60 each. There are bottom cottages which have running water and bathrooms. At the last camp, there are rudimentary men's and women's restrooms.

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

The first day of the climb involves a relatively easy hike through the rainforest. The trail is well-maintained and mostly uphill, with occasional flat sections. It takes around 4-6 hours to reach Mandara Hut, which is situated at an altitude of 2,700 meters (8,858 feet). The hut provides basic accommodation facilities such as bunk beds and communal dining areas.

On the second day, climbers continue their ascent through the rainforest until they reach the heath and moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper and more challenging as they gain altitude. It takes approximately 5-7 hours to reach Horombo Hut, located at an elevation of 3,720 meters (12,205 feet). This hut also offers basic amenities for overnight stays.

On the third day, climbers continue their ascent towards Kibo Hut. The trail passes through the alpine desert zone, characterized by rocky terrain and sparse vegetation. It takes around 6-8 hours to reach Kibo Hut, situated at an altitude of 4,703 meters (15,430 feet). This hut is the last overnight stop before the summit attempt.

The summit day begins in the early hours of the morning, usually around midnight. Climbers start their final push towards the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak, which stands at an elevation of 5,895 meters(19,341 feet). The ascent is challenging and steep, often requiring the use of headlamps. It takes approximately 6-8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak. The descent follows the same route back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut for their last night on the mountain.

On the last day of the Marangu Route, climbers descend from Horombo Hut back to the Marangu Gate. The descent usually takes around 5-6 hours. At the gate, climbers receive certificates of achievement for reaching various points on Mount Kilimanjaro.
