This initial trek ascends gently to Forest Camp, immersing you in the sounds and sights of the jungle, and prepares you for the diverse terrains you’ll encounter.
Day two : Leave Forest Camp and hike into an open savannah of tall grasses and volcanic rocks adorned with lichen. The trail winds through rolling hills and crosses several streams before reaching the Shira Ridge. From here, descend gradually to Shira Camp, where you’ll be greeted by spectacular views of Kibo Peak across the expansive plateau. This day's hike introduces you to the dramatic change in landscape, offering a glimpse of Kilimanjaro's varied environments.
Day three : Spend the day exploring the Shira Plateau with a gentle walk eastward, enjoying panoramic views of Kibo’s glacier-clad peak. As you continue, you’ll reach Shira 2 Camp and then proceed to Moir Hut, situated at the base of the Lent Hills. Moir Hut, a less-frequented site, provides a fantastic opportunity for acclimatization with its varied walking paths and breathtaking views of the plateau, enhancing your preparation for higher altitudes.
Day four : Ascend from Moir Hut towards the Lava Tower, known as “Shark’s Tooth,” a striking volcanic formation. After taking in the semi-desert landscape, descend to Barranco Camp, which sits at an altitude that aids in acclimatization. This day is crucial for adjusting to higher elevations and offers a mix of rugged volcanic terrain and distinctive rock features, setting you up for the challenging summit push ahead.
Day five : Begin with the challenging climb up the Barranco Wall, then continue through the Karanga Valley to Barafu Camp. This section of the trek provides varied and spectacular views of Kilimanjaro’s peaks, including the impressive Mawenzi and Kibo. At Barafu Camp, you'll have the opportunity to rest and prepare for the summit attempt, with the final stretch of your climb now in sight.
Day six : Start your summit ascent very early in the morning, navigating through scree to reach Stella Point on the crater rim. From there, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire African continent. Celebrate your achievement with the breathtaking sunrise views, then descend to Mweka Hut. This descent through the changing environments of the mountain allows you to rest and recover in the forested surroundings after the intense summit push.
Day seven : Conclude your trek by descending through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you will receive your summit certificate as a testament to your achievement. The trail can be wet and muddy, so having gaiters and trekking poles is advantageous.
