Safari summary

In the space of just two days there is a great tour option available to you if you are interested in African wildlife. A great way to end a longer tour of Africa, or a great way to extend you trip, this two day visit will undoubtedly leave you wanting more!

Tracking gorillas in their natural habitat requires a permit and this is included in the price of this two day tour. The price is also inclusive of the driver, tour guide, and transport for your car whilst on safari. In addition to this, the price also covers your accommodation for the night at a quaint hotel or guest house.

Upon arrival at the airport, you will be met by your guide who will take you to the Volcanoes National Park aka ‘Parc National Des Volcans’ which is located in the north-western region of Rwanda and known for its volcanic terrain and its famous mountain gorillas.

Highlights of the second day will include a morning dedicated to the region’s legendary primates. After breakfast, you will trek through the forests towards the border of the Virunga mountain range in the Volcanoes National Park to seek out one of the only remaining mountain gorilla families in the world (mountain gorillas are the most endangered species of all gorillas). The park was the first of its kind in Africa and was created to protect the gorillas back in the 1920s.

In the afternoon you will travel to Kigali to visit the Kigali Genocide memorial centre for an educational yet poignant experience.

The rest of the afternoon can be spent at your leisure – shopping and relaxing before your transfer back to the airport ready for your departure. A short and sweet trip, you’ll be surprised at how much you can fit into just two action packed days!

The park is located in a chain of dormant Volcanoes called Ibirunga in the northwest of the Country. The volcanoes include Muhabura, Gahinga, Sabyinyo, Bisoke and Karisimbi. The park lies within the former provinces of Gisenyi (15%) and Ruhengeri (85%) a long the boarder of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda and is part of the Albertine or western Rift. The Park is continuous with other two parks in the neighboring Countries; Virunga National Park in DRC and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda; and the three compose the ecosystem of Virunga Massif. The Mountain Gorillas’ survival today thanks to Diana Fossey’s research that was buried at her research center in the Virunga’s alongside the Animals to which she dedicated her life to. Critical and public acclain ensured that gorillas in the mist also served to raise International awareness of the plight of the Mountain Gorillas. A mere 300 of these gentle giants survive in the world, half of them resident in Rwanda, where habituated groups ranging in size from 8-43 individuals-cans be visited by up to 56 tourists daily.

Day 2

Volcanoes

DAY 2: Gorilla tracking After an early breakfast, report to the ORTPN Offices for formal registration. Drive to the Volcanoes national park for the lifetime experiences of tracking the mountain gorillas. Gorilla tracking in the park National Des Volcanoes can entail anything from 1-8 hours but seeing and staying with the gorillas for one hour track through the forest, led by experienced trackers who have spent their entire lives living in or close to the forest. Your track will be enchanting as you weave through overhanging vines, moss-covered hagenia trees and giant lobelias that thrive in the tropical climate. After tracking drive back to Kigali for your evening flight. What to Bring: You must bring appropriate walking or hiking shoes as trainers are not suitable for the forest terrain. Waterproof clothing, preferably dark in colour as bright colours will attract insects, is necessary since the forest is at high altitude so there is a good chance of rain. Remember to bring high-factor sunscreen and a hat too. During your trek you will need to have plenty of water with you, so it is a good idea to hire a porter for the day. Many of the porters are kind, so, let them help you, be generous and create a job for a day! NOTE/ Clients who choose to stay for more days at the end of their safari are free to do so. We can arrange hotel accommodation for your extended stay. Should you wish to spend more time exploring Rwanda, Congo, Burundi, Uganda, Kenya or Tanzania, we can arrange further safaris and city tours to meet your requirements.
