Safari summary
The velvet-green slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes are a lofty and lush paradise. In the rainforests here--buzzing with the sounds of jungle life--the soft mists prevail as they did when Dian Fossey wrote her legendary book Gorillas in the Mist. And the creature that drew Dr. Fossey is the same one which beckons to us: the rare and regal Mountain Gorilla.

Day 1
Day 1: Kigali, Rwanda The adventure begins today!Rwanda is a remarkable, revitalized country that has reclaimed its reputation as the preferred destination for tracking mountain gorillas. Our delightful accommodations are at the Kigali Serena Hotel.
Day 2
Virunga
Day 2: Kigali - Parc National des Volcans After a fascinating tour of Kigali, we drive to Ruhengeri-a quaint market town in the Virunga foothills. We settle into the superb Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, an ideal base from which to explore these verdant highlands and luxurious by any definition. Accommodations are charming stone cottages with separate sitting areas, sheltered verandas and breathtaking views.
Day 3
Day 3: Parc National des Volcans Our trek begins! With skilled trackers leading us through the forest of overhanging vines, giant lobelias and mossy hagenia trees, we traverse this emerald canopy toward the object of our fascination: the endangered mountain gorilla. It's another world-a gorilla family in the throes of everyday life, feeding, playing, foraging and caring for its young. Encountering the mountain gorilla in its natural environs is amongst the most captivating wildlife moments imaginable. Gorilla trekking is both a singular experience and an exclusive one. There are seven habituated gorilla families in the forest and no more than eight people are allowed to visit any given family for more than an hour each day. Later, we visit a village and meet Rwandan men who've made the remarkable transition from poachers to active conservationists. It's also a wonderful opportunity to glimpse traditional Rwandan life.
Day 4
Day 4: Burera and Ruhondo Lakes Today brings another incredible experience with a different family of gorillas, noting the subtle differences between clans. Later we explore the strikingly beautiful Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, and mingle with the locals at a bustling food market in Ruhengeri.
Day 5
Day 5: Depart Kigali We make the short drive to Kigali for our flight home, recalling this thrilling glimpse into a world that few will have an opportunity to see.
