Safari summary
Zambia is an enormous country and its natural resources are protected by impenetrable sub-tropical bush and impassable roads.
An exception, and highlight, is the spectacular Victoria Falls and its lifeblood, the Zambezi River. Here, access is by excellent paved roads and an international airport in Livingstone, which is about 20km upstream from Victoria Falls.
The falls themselves, glimpsed through the squalling spray during high-water season, beggar the imagination for their size and tremendous power. Seen during low-water season, they form a picturesque series of single-drop cascades.
With the Victoria Falls to compete with, the attractions in the area go largely unsung unless experienced first-hand. The game parks, lush sub-tropical savannah and the beautiful Zambezi River combine to create a seductive spell that’s hard to break.

Itinerary
Day 1
Kafue
Day 1 – 2: Morning arrival on international flight in Lusaka There is a 3-hour road transfer in comfortable, air conditioned high clearance vehicles to the reserve. Mukambi Lodge overlooks the Kafue River, one of the best-kept secrets in Africa. Kafue National Park at nearly 23.000sq km is one of the largest reserves in Africa and is roughly the size of Wales. Its has very distinct and diverse eco-systems making it a game viewing paradise: riverine forests, miombo woodland, mopane woodland, teak forest, savannah and even wetlands (Busanga Plains), associated with the huge Kafue river form the parts of the reserve that we will be visiting. Of all the Zambian parks, Kafue National Park has the widest range of mammal species. Animals that you are likely to encounter are elephant, buffalo, warthog, zebra, hippo and several antelope species like impala, puku, sable, hartebeest, bushbuck, roan and eland. As for the predators, all are present: lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, serval, caracal and jackal. In the northern part of the park, the wetlands of Busanga Plains, is also a good place to see sitatunga and red lechwe. The diversity of habitats makes Kafue National Park an excellent bird photography area. It boasts an impressive list of 478 of Zambia’s 733-recorded species. Bird species in the park include African fish eagle, woolly-necked stork, marabou stork, saddle billed stork, goliath heron, crowned crane, wattled crane, ground hornbill, giant kingfisher, sacred ibis, Pel’s owl and purple-crested lourie amongst others. Mukambi lodge is perfectly situated on a bend of the Kafue River. The large, open camp is designed to ensure your privacy at your chalet. You will be accommodated in luxury en-suite chalets overlooking the Kafue River. Each chalet has teak furniture, four-poster beds and a viewing deck to relax on. Perfect after a days hard photographing. . .
Day 3
Kafue
Day 3-5: We move from Mukambi loge to their bush camp, situated in the northern heart of the Kafue reserve. The Busanga plains are a floodplain of waters from the Kafue River. In this season, the water recedes away, leaving lush grazing for the grazers. The large numbers of grazers then attract the predators, a perfect scenario for excellent viewing and inter action. Busanga’s game numbers during these dry times are legendary and one can expect to see large herds of buffalo, puku, impala and elephant. It is also one of the best places to see the elusive sitatunga. Accommodation will be at the bush camp, a beautiful camp within a grove of trees overlooking the plains. Here you will be staying in meru styled tents. Each tent is a walk in affair with solid beds and en suite facilities ensuring relaxing comfort. We will stay at this camp for three nights. There is no electricity at this camp. The remote Busanga plains are one of Zambia’s best-kept secrets meaning the area is lacking in tourists. This is a real highlight of the area- having the open plains all to yourself, with all manner of wild animals around your is a beautiful experience. . .
Day 6
Kafue
Day 6 – 7: We transfer back to Mukambi to complete the stay at Kafue in the luxury of the main camp. Game drive and boat cruises will be the order of the stay here and seeing some of the divers’ areas that weren’t seen in the first visit. . .
Day 8
South Luangwa
Day 8 – 10: We transfer by road to Lusaka from where we catch a scheduled, 1-hour flight to Mfuwe. Nestled deep within the rift valley of Zambia lies a reserve that combines some of the best wildlife viewing in Africa with a setting as unique as it is wildlife is diverse. South Luangwa, with the Murchison escarpment on its eastern border and the Luangwa River to the west is a reserve that conjures up scenes of classic Africa. It has all the romanticism of adventure and exploration from day’s gone bye; but today it is the wildlife that is the main attraction- the wildlife and Luangwa River. During the rainy season, the reserve is a veritable marshland of mud and elephant damaged roads- almost impassable. However, during the dry season, the languidly meandering Luangwa river dries up, forming pools of water, ox-bow lakes and dead-end tributaries- and it is these pools of water in the high woodland which produce such stunning wildlife viewing. South Luangwa hosts large populations of elephants, buffalo, hippopotamus and (Thornycrofts) giraffe. Leopard and Lion are exceptionally well represented- indeed; South Luangwa is touted as having one of the highest densities of leopard in Africa. Birds are also a major attraction in Luangwa- with over 420 species recorded. The highlight of the birding experience here is seeing the various storks and herons flocking to feed on the fish in drying pools. Mfuwe Lodge is famous for its elephants walking trough the reception area, but it is also well known for its simple, open style planning and luxurious chalets. From the comfort of the Lodge guests may view some of Africa’s majestic wildlife as animals come down to drink. Elephant, hippopotamus, many antelope species and crocodiles are plentiful in this area. In between game drives, walks and meals, guests may relax around the pool or in the unique library which is entirely dedicated to nature conservation related issues, African culture, tradition and history. One third of each chalet’s perimeter can be opened, to allow the guest to enjoy the views, the sounds, the scents and the mood of the African wilderness. Each chalet has a large private deck overlooking one of the lagoons. The bathrooms have both bath and shower, with separate toilet. The bathing corner can be completely opened to offer guests an open-air bathing experience. . .
Day 11
Victoria Falls | Zambezi
Day 11: An early morning flight transfer from Mfuwe takes us back to Lusaka. From here it is a road transfer to Livingstone and the Sosi lodge on the mighty Zambezi River. Based in stunning surrounds, we will be able to explore the stunning power and beauty of Victoria Falls. We will have ample time to enjoy all angles of the falls, from below, and above, where the mighty Zambezi seems so calm, but only a few meters away the waters turn into a tumultuous frenzy. This really is the best way to end a safari and the noisy, spray and power of the falls will be an endearing last image of this safari. . .
Day 12
Day 12: After a morning spent around the falls, we transfer back to Lusaka. Here, after 12 glorious days in excellent safari country, the tour comes to an end. You board your (evening) international flights home and this is unfortunately the end of the safari.
