Kilimanjaro Trekking

10 days—Lemosho Route

$2100-2250 USD

Safari summary

The Lemosho route is often considered the most beautiful and original of all Kilimanjaro routes. It is still relatively unknown and is not as frequented as the Marangu, Machame or Rongai route. Only the Umbwe route counts even fewer mountain tourists than Lemosho. The route is a modification of the Shira or Londorossi route. Only the ascent to the Shira Plateau is a little different on the Lemosho route. The descent is via the Mweka route, which gives you the opportunity to get to know two different paths. The chance to reach the summit definitely increases with an additional acclimatization day at Barranco Camp (day 3) or at Karanga Camp on day 4.

The drive leads through the villages and fields of the Chaggas to the Londorossi Gate at about 2200 m, where you will be registered and meet your escort team. Continue to the starting point of the trekking, about 15 km southeast of the gate. This is followed by the first ascent through sparse mountain forest.

Big Tree Camp( Mti Mkubwa Camp)

Day 3 Shira 1 Camp

Kilimanjaro

You will be woken up around 7:00 am with hot tea or coffee. After breakfast you start the second day. They leave the mountain rain-forest and the vegetation gradually passes from heath zone into open alpine landscape. The trail takes you over smaller ascents and descents and over small streams up to the Shira ridge. From here you have, in good weather, a fantastic view of the Kibo. You will then descend to the Shira Plateau.

Shira 1 Camp

Day 4 Shira Plateau, Shira Camp 2

Kilimanjaro

Today you have a short day ahead of you. Overlooking the Shira Needle and Shira Cathedral rock peaks, a slight climb takes you to Shira Camp 2. After lunch, a hike across the Shira Plateau allows for better acclimatization. Overnight in a tent at about 3,900 m with a view of Mt. Meru, Kibo and Shira. (Walking time approx. 3 h, 400 m uphill)

Shira 2 Camp

Day 5 Barranco-Tal

Kilimanjaro

Today's route profile favors acclimatization. The first steeper gradients lead to approx. 4,600 m. You will reach the Lava Tower, a striking rock at the foot of the Western Breach and the highest point of the days at "halftime". Then, at the foot of Kibo Peak, descend into the Barranco Valley to the camp with stunning views of Kibo's glaciers and snowfields, which for the first time seem within reach – 2,000m above you. (Walking time approx. 7-8 h, 700 m uphill, 600 m downhill)

Barranco Camp

Day 6 Acclimatization at Karanga

Kilimanjaro

During breakfast you can take a look at the huge Barranco Wall, still in the shade, which rises majestically in front of you. You then climb the approx. 200 m of the wall with the use of your hands, as there are some climbing passages to overcome. Continue to the Karanga Valley, which you will cross with easier ascents and descents. Above the valley is camped at about 4,035 m. In the afternoon you can walk a bit uphill (about 200 m) to acclimatize better. (Walking time approx. 4-5 h,)

Karanga Camp

Day 7 Barafu Camp

Kilimanjaro

Today's section follows a ridge up to Barafu Camp at about 4,640 m. From here you have a wonderful view of the Mawenzi. In the late afternoon short briefing for the summit day and preparation of the equipment.(Walking time approx. 3-4 h, 600 m uphill)

Barafu Camp

Day 8 Uhuru Peak

Kilimanjaro

The summit storm begins around midnight. In the light cone of the headlamps and on the frozen ground, you climb in about 6 hours over serpentine to Stella Point to about 5,740 m, which you reach at sunrise. Above all, a strong will helps with the ascent. The sun gives new strength for the last meters to the summit, and about 1 hour later you stand exhausted and happy on the highest point of Africa (5,895 m).After an extensive break, you descend on the Mweka route to the last camp about 3,790 m.

Millennium Camp

Day 9 Descent and drive to hotel
