Murchison Falls National Park lies at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley, where the sweeping Bunyoro escarpment tumbles into vast, palm-dotted savannah. First gazetted as a game reserve in 1926, it is Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area, hosting 76 species of mammals and 451 birds. In the open savannah grasslands you’ll encounter giraffes, hartebeest, buffalo, elephants, lions and many other animals. For the birding enthusiast, these areas support the secretary bird, black chested snake eagle, tawny and marshal eagles, carmine and swallow tailed bee-eaters. This is a beautiful drive across borassus palm forest and grassland savannah down to Lake Albert where the Albert Nile heads north to the Sudan. After lunch at Fort Murchison, you’ll take a boat trip to the bottom of the Murchison falls where the Nile bursts through a 7m gap or downriver to the delta where the Nile empties into Lake Albert.
