Terrapin in Serengeti

Terrapin

Behavior and diet

A terrapin is also known as a fresh water tortoise. It is found in many parts of the world and can adapt to many different environments. Unlike tortoises (land) and turtles (sea tortoises), the terrapin folds its head in sideways when pulling it into the shell. In Africa, the Cape and the serrated terrapin are the most common species of terrapin. Females will come back to the place of their birth to lay up to 30 eggs and will then leave the new turtles to find their way into the sea.
